Elope Weddings in Italy Civil Ceremonies (legally binding) |
Civil Marriages conducted in Italy are recognised overseas and they are conducted in accordance with Italian regulations. Weddings conducted in Italy are automatically registered worldwide
It is not possible to remarry each other legally in Italy if you have already been married in your country although a blessing ceremony can be conducted (see below)
Civil ceremonies by law must be performed in Town Halls, Villas and Palaces approved by the Italian government. The venues are mainly indoor venues which include Grandeous historical buildings, ex-churches, and the town halls premises. The Italian venues are elengantly decorated with famous paintings and sculptures making them the perfect setting for your stylish wedding ceremony.
Civil ceremonies conducted outside assigned buildings are only possible in certain locations and only if permitted by Italian government.
The ceremony is performed by the Mayor or their representatives and is conducted in Italian
An official interpreter (for couples who do not speak italian) and 2 witnesses over 18 are required by law.
The ceremony lasts approximately 20 minutes
On request and subject to celebrants agreement and time available before the next wedding, the ceremony may be enriched with personal vows, readings and music
A civil ceremony in English text will be forwarded to you 4 weeks prior the ceremony
Depending on the marriage location you may be requested to sign in person a sworn declaration at the town hall a few days prior the wedding (times vary depending on town hall and nationality: usually, NON-EU citizens approximately 2 weeks prior, EU citizens 2 - 4 days prior)
Women whose previous marriage was terminated within the last 300 days cannot marry in Italy

Elope in Italy: Catholic Weddings in Italy (legally binding) |
Catholic weddings in Italy are the only 'religious' legally binding wedding recognised in Italy. Therefore, only religious weddings with a Catholic rite can have legal validity and automatically registered worldwide if one of you was married before with a religious ceremony, you cannot marry again with a catholic rite unless an official annulment was granted by the religious authorities
Requirements to get married with a catholic rite, is that at least one of you must be catholic.
A catholic ceremony will combine both a civil and catholic ceremony, therefore there is no need to get married first at the town hall. The priest will marry you both religiously and legally.
An english speaking priest can be provided
Ceremonies last approx 45 minutes

'Non Catholic' Religious Weddings in Italy (i.e. protestant, jewish, anglican or any other religion) are not legally binding, although they still have 'religious' binding.
Full religious documents still need to be provided for a religious wedding in Italy, these vary depending on your religion
